The Last Movie

Dennis Hopper’s legendary follow-up to Easy Rider ended his Hollywood directing career for at least fifteen years. Barely seen again after brief premiere bookings, it hasn’t built up a reputation as a suppressed masterpiece. So what is it exactly? A new spotless restoration gives a dazzling rebirth to Hopper’s Perú- filmed deconstruction of Hollywood. The astonishing number of notables in the cast list may in itself demand a viewing.

Rita Moreno Says She’s ‘Nervous’ About Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ and Won’t Make a Cameo

Rita Moreno Says She’s ‘Nervous’ About Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ and Won’t Make a Cameo
Even after 57 years, Rita Moreno is just as opinionated as Anita, her character from “West Side Story.” When asked her thoughts on Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming “West Side Story” remake, Moreno said she most likely would not be making a cameo. Moreno appeared alongside several original cast members at the Beverly Hills Paley Center for an event honoring choreographer Jerome Robbins last week, where director Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) moderated a Q and A.

According to Entertainment Weekly, while Russ Tamblyn (Riff), George Chakiris (Bernardo), and Eliot Feld (Baby John) all expressed interest in making cameos, Moreno demurred. “That would be strange,” she said in a red carpet interview. “I think it would be distracting. No, no, no I don’t belong in there in any capacity.”

Remaking “West Side Story” has been a passion project of Spielberg’s for many years, having pursued the rights for decades. Spielberg worked with Kushner on “Lincoln” and “Munich,

Ansel Elgort takes on the lead in Spielberg’s West Side Story

  • HeyUGuys
Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort has landed himself the leading role of Tony in Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming adaptation of West Side Story.

Based on the Broadway musical, the story focuses on the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs. The story is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Pulitzer prize winner and Oscar nominee Tony Kushner has penned the remake.

The original stage musical included music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and was set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood.

Also in the news – Taron Egerton is the spitting image of Elton John in first look image from Rocketman

The stage show was first adapted for film in 1961 and was directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. It starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris.

The Last Hunt

Robert Taylor and Stewart Granger shine in Richard Brooks’ engaging drama about the grim slaughter of the Buffalo — a fairly appalling historical episode. A disclaimer is required to explain why we’re seeing real animals killed on screen… which in this case would seem justified by the film’s ecological theme.

‘The Last Movie’ Trailer: First Up From New Distributor Arbelos Is 4K Restoration Of Cult Classic
Exclusive: Arbelos Films has constructed a trailer for The Last Movie, the now cult Dennis Hopper experimental indie that has divided film aficionados since its 1971 release. Arbelos has completed its 4K film restoration of the pic that now becomes a notable distribution kickoff for the company, which acquired Cinelicious after it dissolved more than a year ago.

The Last Movie opens August 3 at the Metrograph in New York, the city that marked the site of the original’s unsuccessful critical and commercial 1971 bow, which came on the heels of Hopper’s enormous success with Easy Rider in his directing debut. The restoration will later screen at the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles and 19 other locations nationwide.

The plan is for Los Angeles-based Arbelos to mine the Cinelicious library it now reps to release both older and newer films. Also on its upcoming slate and Béla Tarr’s 1994 film Sátántangó.

‘West Side Story’ Returning To Broadway; Director Ivo Van Hove Will Stage Revival

‘West Side Story’ Returning To Broadway; Director Ivo Van Hove Will Stage Revival
Director Ivo van Hove will stage a major new production of West Side Story for Broadway next season, with new choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. The revival, produced by Scott Rudin, will begin performances December 10, 2019, with an official opening night of February 6, 2020, at a theater to be announced.

“This is Ivo van Hove’s first Broadway musical,” said Stephen Sondheim, the classic musical’s lyricist, “and I’m eager to see what he does with it. What keeps theater alive over time is reinterpretation, and when that reinterpretation is as invigorating as his productions of A View from the Bridge and The Crucible, it makes for something to look forward to with excitement.”

The new production of the 1957 Jerome Robbins/Arthur Laurents/Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim classic, which was adapted for the screen in 1961 (see photo above) was announced today by Rudin.

David Saint, literary executor of the Arthur Laurents Estate,

Twin Peaks: Season Three Ratings

During its first season in 1990, Twin Peaks performed quite well for ABC. In season two, the series endured multiple timeslot changes and resolved the foundational mystery of who killed Laura Palmer partway through. Unsurprisingly, its ratings fell off and the network cancelled the mystery horror drama, which went on to spawn a feature film prequel, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Now that Showtime has revived the soapy supernatural series, how will it fare? Will Twin Peaks be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season? Stay tuned. The Twin Peaks TV series revival kicks off 25 years after the murder of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) shocked the seemingly tranquil town of Twin Peaks, Washington. It centers on the return of idiosyncratic FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). ‘Twin Peaks’ Review: David Lynch Bids at Least One Pensive Goodbye in a Powerful ‘Part 15’

‘Twin Peaks’ Review: David Lynch Bids at Least One Pensive Goodbye in a Powerful ‘Part 15’
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Twin Peaks: The Return” Episode 15, “Part 15.”]

Throughout “The Return,” David Lynch and Mark Frost have paid tribute to cast and crew who have passed away since the original seasons aired — including a dedication to David Bowie in last week’s episode — but “Part 15” felt like an episode-long tribute to Catherine E. Coulson. The woman known fondly as the Log Lady and formally as Margaret Lanterman said her final goodbye near the end of Episode 15, speaking to Hawk (Michael Horse) over the phone, just as she has all season, and reminding him to “watch for that one […] the one under the moon on Blue Pine Mountain.”

It was difficult and largely unnecessary to absorb plot points when her final words meant so much more than the narrative. Coulson passed away in 2015 and she filmed scenes for “The Return” shortly before her death,
